The World Baseball Classic 2026 is on, with Australia and Taiwan clashing in Pool C on Wednesday at Tokyo Dome, Japan. Australia will come into this year’s edition as a team that’s on the rise after participating in all the previous five editions. They nearly made it to the semis in 2023 after succumbing 4-3 to Cuba in the quarterfinals. The Aussies boast MLB-quality talent in their roster, including Travis Bozzana, the 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick.
Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) are also making their sixth appearance at the WBC. In 2023, they defeated the Netherlands and Italy in pool play, although their 2-2 record meant they failed to advance to the knockout rounds. The Chinese are tipped to make some noise in the pool after winning the Premier12 tournament in 2024. Chieh-Hsien Chen, who plays for the Chinese Professional Baseball League, will captain the side.

Both teams will fancy their chances of making it out of the pool behind the hosts Japan, who are the +330 favorites to lift the title. Taiwan is the betting favorite on Wednesday night, thanks to their superior form and head-to-head record. Their pitching department looks decent, led by Yun-Min Lin of the Arizona Diamondbacks and left-hander Wei-En Lin of the Athletics. Lin pitched two qualifying matches, giving up only one hit. However, let’s not underestimate the Australians, who boast arguably more pop in their roster. They were excellent in their last pool campaign, and most of the 2023 names are back for this year’s edition with more experience. Still, we think Taiwan will edge it.
