Last season, Feyenoord relived glorious moments, such as winning their first Champions League title in 1970, when in the 2024/2025 Champions League, they produced a result that shocked the world when they eliminated AC Milan at the San Siro.
However, the team now managed by legendary former Netherlands striker Robin Van Persie failed to qualify for next season's Champions League, being eliminated at the hands of Turkish side Fenerbahçe; the Eredivisie club lost the rematch 5-2 in Istanbul. Because of that setback, Feyenoord, who finished third in the last Dutch league behind PSV and Ajax, will instead be playing in the Europa League, starting Wednesday when they travel to Portugal to face SC Braga.
Despite the Champions League setback, Van Persie's tenure as Feyenoord manager has had a very successful start in the Eredivisie: wins against Excelsior, a 4-0 win against Rotterdam, a clean sheet against Heerenveen and Sittards, and a final 3-3 draw against AZ Alkmaar have given Feyenoord a good run of form heading into Portugal.
SC Braga has repeated its Europa League participation, having finished 25th, in first place among the teams eliminated from the league stage.
