As far as concerns the heavy favorite in this match, the Italian player put in a fine showing at the Monte Carlo tournament, where he made it through the qualifying stages as a lucky loser, then reached the second round to face Ugo Humbert. The Italian managed to win the first set (7-5) but collapsed in the next two sets, eventually losing 7-5, 3-6, 1-6. A regular at ATP tournaments, Lorenzo Sonego is the logical favorite against a player of a much lower level.
