Two players separated by just four spots in the ATP rankings will face off in front of the Italian crowd in this first-round match at the Rome Masters 1000: local favorite Lorenzo Sonego and Peru’s Ignacio Buse!
Although he has the advantage of playing at home, Lorenzo Sonego is facing an uphill battle in this match. The 30-year-old has played only eight matches in total this year and was sidelined for several months due to a wrist injury. Returning on April 14, he won his first match of the season on clay in Barcelona, a three-set win over world No. 136 Pedro Martinez, but has since lost 100% of his other matches, racking up three consecutive defeats.
Ignacio Buse, for his part, is no stranger to clay, having already won three ITF and two Challenger titles on this surface in his young career. And the 22-year-old seems to be gaining momentum lately, having reached the semifinals at the Rio de Janeiro tournament in February. Although he has struggled a bit in recent weeks, he managed to win his first-round match in Marrakech against M. Berrettini and, more importantly, won his first-round match at the Madrid Masters 1000 against A. Mannarino.
