Rinky Hijikata of Australia will battle veteran Fabio Fognini of Italy in the final qualifier of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Masters on Tuesday.
Hijikata halted his three-match skid with a hard-earned 6-4 6-7(11) 4-1 ret. win over Llyod Harris of South Africa. The No. 84-ranked Hijikata came out strong in the third set, taking a comfortable lead after losing a grueling tiebreaker in the second set. Harris eventually retired while trailing 1-4, sending Hijikata to final qualifying match vs. Fognini.
Fognini is also coming off a losing streak-busting win over Alexander Ritschard of Switzerland 6-1 7-6(6) in the qualifier 1. Fognini, who had not tasted a win since the first round of the Cap Cana Challenger, destroyed the Swiss in the first set before displaying the poise of the veteran to close it out in two sets.
