Spain (5-1) takes on Portugal (3-3) for a FIBA World Cup Qualifying game on Friday, August 28, at Pabellon Principe Felipe in Zaragoza, Spain.
Interestingly, these two teams last faced each other in the 2011 EuroBasket, when Spain won by 14 points. Obviously, the landscape has changed for both teams since then.
Spain started qualifying on a very strong note, winning their first five games. However, they ran into trouble last July, dropping a tightly-contested 91-89 overtime loss to Georgia. Mainstay big man Willy Hernangomez led the team with his efficient 19 points and 8 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to secure the win.
On Friday, Willy will suit up again for Spain, along with his brother Juancho Hernangomez. The Spaniards are also bringing out Hugo Gonzalez, who was a rookie with the Boston Celtics last season. Many pundits say that Gonzalez has the potential to be the next flag bearer of Spain's basketball team.
Meanwhile, Portugal kept their World Cup hopes alive with a morale-boosting 71-56 win over Greece. Diogo Brito, Rafael Lisboa, and Travante Williams led the scoring for the Portuguese in that win.
Good news for Portugal is that those scorers are suiting up against Spain on Friday.
