Now that the US Open is a thing of the past, a selection of WTA players have moved on to Mexico, where the Guadalajara Open Akron presented by Santander is being played at Centro Panamericano de Tenis in Zapopan. On Tuesday, there's an interesting first-round match between Polina Kudermetova and Marina Stakusic. For the Russian, this looks like a big opportunity to build some momentum and get back to her best after a period of inconsistency. Earlier in the season, especially when reaching the semi-finals of the WTA event in Brisnane, Kudermetova showed some excellent form. Can she regain that form here?
As for Stakusic, well, 2025 hasn't been a great year on hard courts. The Canadian comes into this match having not gone beyond the third-round stage in any hard-court tournament, while she's now lost six of her last ten matches on a hard surface. Her form against higher-ranked players isn't exactly great either, which means she could be in for another early exit.

The Russian has been far from consistent in recent times, but she has performed with credit against much better opponents than Marina Stakusic, which tells me that she really ought to be capable of getting the job done here without dropping a set. Over the last year or so, on hard courts, when Kudermetova has been faced with players of Stakusic's level, more often than not, she wins in straight sets, and I'm just not sure that fact is reflected enough in the early odds.
