American rising star Alex Michelsen will duke it out with ATP veteran Nuno Borges in the first round of the 2025 Geneva Open on Sunday.
Michelsen has lost his opening matches in both ATP 1000 clay-court tournaments in Madrid and Rome. Since his quarterfinal finish at the 2025 US Men’s Clay-Court Championship, Michelsen has gone winless in ATP main tour matches, succumbing to Alexander Bublik 7-6(2) 7-6(4) in Madrid and Laslo Djere 6-0 6-3 in Rome. The encouraging news for the young American is that he won a title at the 2025 Estoril Challenger, where he bested some top-100 players like Luca Nardi 6-3 6-4 and Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4 6-2.
Borges is 1-3 in his last four matches and has only gone as far as the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters this clay-court season. The Portuguese is 6-6 on clay this year and 18-15 overall. He’s 6-6 against the ATP top-50 players this year, but 9-2 in first-round matches.
