A tight, low-scoring affair is expected as Metropolitan Division rivals, the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils, meet for the first time this season on Saturday at UBS Arena.
The Islanders are well known for their rock-solid defense and allowed just 2.88 goals per game last season. They shared the NHL’s fifth-best defensive record with eventual Cup champions, the Carolina Hurricanes.
New York’s defense was also in form earlier this week when the team began the new season with a 2-1 road loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. After giving up two first-period goals, Ilya Sorokin played a perfect game in the Islanders’ crease.
The Devils kicked off their 2026-27 campaign with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. Sheldon Keefe’s team lacked sharpness early in the season and struggled to live up to the favorite tag, falling behind twice. But they eventually skated away with two points on a goal by Jack Hughes.
On paper, Saturday’s test will be tougher for the Devils, and they must raise their level of play. They will face a pumped-up crowd, who will want to see a bounce-back performance from their team. With Mathew Barcal on the shelf, the Islanders likely need another strong effort from the backline to be successful.
