On Tuesday evening, the Mexicans will look to make it four wins from four at the 2026 World Cup. This time they’re up against Ecuador, who will take on the co-hosts at the world-famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
As one of the teams to finish the groups with nine points, the Mexicans soared into the knockouts, and with a home crowd behind them, they should fancy themselves to get the job done and advance. However, the Ecuadorians proved that they can cause an upset by beating the Germans in that final round of group games, so we shouldn’t be too surprised if they make life difficult for the co-hosts.
From a betting point of view, it could pay to side with ‘Both Teams to Score’. The Mexicans have more than enough offensive quality to hurt their opponents, but they have looked as if they could be hurt on the break, despite not conceding during the groups, while the Ecuadorians do their best offensive work in games of this nature.

Mexico - Ecuador: Form Analysis

The Mexicans couldn’t really have done any more during the groups. They were expected to make a fast start on home soil, and they did. They followed that dominant win against South Africa by beating the South Koreans, showing that they very much have the tools to grind out wins, before easily beating a disheartened Czech team. Javier Aguirre’s men are yet to concede a goal at this tournament, and that too will have them feeling confident ahead of this clash.
Fortunately, Sebastian Beccacece’s men thrived under the pressure of knowing that they needed to beat the Germans to get through, and beat the Germans they did, coming from behind to win by two goals to one.
Ecuador’s route to the knockouts was not as straightforward, not at all. While the Mexicans were fast out of the gates, the South Americans struggled to get going, losing their first group game by a goal to zero against Ivory Coast. They then couldn’t find a way through against minnows Curacao, tying 0-0, which left them in what appeared to be a difficult position. Fortunately, Sebastian Beccacece’s men thrived under the pressure of knowing that they needed to beat the Germans to get through, and beat the Germans they did, coming from behind to win by two goals to one.

Mexico & Ecuador Squad Analysis
Will Mexican boss Javier Aguirre change much ahead of this final knockout match? Well, given that he did rotate somewhat ahead of that final group win over Czechia, the answer is yes. Brian Gutierrez and Raul Jimenez were both rested, though both are seen as key components of the EL Tri offense, so we should see both return to the starting XI here.
Brian Gutierrez and Raul Jimenez were both rested, though both are seen as key components of the EL Tri offense, so we should see both return to the starting XI here.
Ecuador’s performance against Germany was a strong one, so there’s every chance that head coach Sebastian Beccacece sticks rather than twists in terms of team selection. The Argentine is unlikely to replace any of the starting XI from that Germany game, which means that Pervis Estupinan is likely to remain on the bench. Kevin Rodrigues did make a positive impact from the bench, but he too could be set for another role as a substitute.

Our Mexico vs Ecuador Prediction
The early market is underestimating the chances of a game where both teams find the net at least once. After all, the Mexicans have scored in 100% of their games at this tournament, while the Ecuadorians showed in that final game that they’re at their best offensively in games against bigger teams who are likely to dictate possession, and that will definitely be the case in Mexico City on Tuesday.
Moreover, when the teams met as recently as late 2025, they tied having both registered a goal.
Our Mexico vs Ecuador Pick: Both Teams to Score.

Tie
It could also pay to bet on the tie. Sure, the Mexicans are yet to put a foot wrong, picking up maximum points in the groups, but let’s not beat around the bush, they had it easy. This is absolutely their toughest task yet, and we know that the Ecuadorians can dig deep and frustrate teams. After all, this is a team that has very few losses on its record in the last few years, so don’t be surprised if the men in yellow take the pragmatic co-hosts, who don’t exactly dazzle and blow opponents out of the water, all the way to extra time.
