Alexander Zverev could find himself in another brutal three-set match against another tough South American clay-court artist in Mariano Navone in the second round of the 2026 Madrid Open. The total is set at 21.5 games with the over dishing out a solid -140 price.

Zverev’s struggles to put South American players away easily are no accident. As a matter of fact, it is a testament to the region’s reputation as the hotbed for terrific clay-court players.
This is why I believe Zverev will be in another testy match against Mariano Navone. Navone might have little success against top-tier opponents, but he was able to at least challenge the majority of them on the red dirt. In Bucharest, Navone managed to claim the title by dealing damage on the return. He converted 21 of 43 breakpoint opportunities for a 48 percent conversion rate.
Zverev hasn’t been as sharp on the serve this year as he was in the previous clay-court swings. The German only saved 3 of 12 breakpoints (25%) in Munich and 9 of 21 breakpoints (42.9%) in Monte Carlo.
The +3.5-game cushion may not be enough for Navone to cover the spread against Zverev, but I feel more confident that he can drag the German beyond 21 games in this matchup.
