On Wednesday, at the ATP event in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires, Luciano Darderi will make his 2026 clay-court debut. Having most recently competed at the Australian Open, where he played some very promising tennis, the Italian, who is now up to 22 in the rankings, is up against Tomas Barrios Vera, who has the benefit of having already played a match at this event, beating Thiago Seyboth Wild, though it must be said that the Argentine only got through because his Brazilian opponent, who was leading, retired.
This may be Darderi's first clay-court match of the year, but do not be surprised if he makes a positive start. After all, we are talking about a hugely capable clay-court competitor. Darderi has not been beaten on a clay court since losing at the French Open back in May of last year. Since that defeat, he's won no fewer than three clay-court tournaments. Impressive form indeed.

In recent times, we've seen the Italian make light work of beating lower-ranked players in straight sets and he should be chomping at the bit to get back down to business here. Tomas Barrios Vera wasn't exactly thriving against Thiago Seyboth Wild before profiting from a retirement last time out, which tells me that he's about to struggle against a clay-court player of Darderi's quality.
Given how strong Darderi is, I really am surprised to see that a straight-set win for the Italian is priced at -109. That's a value price as far as I'm concerned.
