After a strong start to the season, Francisco Cerundolo has fallen back in recent weeks, particularly over the summer. With the exception of his round of 16 appearance in Toronto, his tour across the Atlantic has been disappointing, as evidenced by his second-round exit at the US Open. Appearing at the Laver Cup last week, the world number 21 defeated Holger Rune before losing to Carlos Alcaraz. But the real competition will resume this Friday for the South American with the ATP tournament in Beijing and a first match against the young Learner Tien.

At 19, the American is having a really interesting first full season on the ATP Tour. Still ranked outside the top 100 at the start of the year, Learner Tien is now ranked 52nd in the world. A quarterfinalist in Toronto last month and again last week in Hangzhou, the Californian is clearly progressing and will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with in the coming seasons. In the meantime, Learner Tien wants to take on one of the outsiders this week in Beijing and, who knows, maybe pull off an upset this Friday in the Chinese capital.
