by Lou Aguila in ATP Shanghai Masters Picks
Former ATP top-10 player Kei Nishikori of Japan will battle Mariano Navone of Argentina in the first round of the 2024 Shanghai Masters on Wednesday. Nishikori has just made it to another quarterfinal, this time on his home soil at the Japan Open Championship. The former US Open runner-up defeated rival Marin Cilic in a three-set tussle 6-4 3-6 6-3 and then upset Jordan Thompson 6-2 6-3 in the next round. Unfortunately, the Japanese’s campaign ended at the hands of Holger Rune in another tight match, 3-6 6-2 7-5. Navone also competed at the 2024 Japan Open, beating Lucas Darderi 6-4 6-4 before falling to Ben Shelton 6-4 6-3 in the second round. The winner of Nishikori-Navone match will play Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next round.

Our Kei Nishikori vs Mariano Navone Prediction
Consistency has been the biggest issue for Nishikori at this point in his career. He just can’t follow up a strong performance with another. Mariano isn’t a great hard-court player but the 23-year-old Argentine has the tools to beat a big-name player. While the logical choice is Nishikori after a quarterfinal stint, I have a weird feeling that he will have an unexplainable lackluster performance against Navone as his inconsistency continues to plague him. Our betting prediction for Mariano Navone vs. Kei Nishikori: Back Navone to win, +260, at FanDuel.
