There's WTA action in Austin this week. It's time for the ATX Open, won last year by Jessica Pegula. Another American hoping to enjoy herself in 2026 is Katie Volynets, who will take on Nikola Bartunkova on Monday. Volynets has made a decent start to 2026, winning more than her share of matches, recently reaching the semi-finals of the hard-court event in Ostrava, Czechia. Can she now build on that back in the US?
Nikola Bartunkova will have been hugely disappointed to get knocked out of her home tournament in Ostrava a while back, especially as that came after she played so well at the Australian Open, but the young up-and-comer hasn't let that defeat get to her, taking time to recover, before winning two qualifying matches in Austin in good style. She could easily now kick on and show everyone why she's a player to take seriously. I really will not be surprised if she does just that.

As fas as I'm concerned, the early market has called this right in that Bartunkova is favorite, but for my money, she could be an even stronger favorite. I've really liked the way that the Czech youngster has played at the start of 2026. She looked like a serious up-and-comer at the Australian Open, while she looks suited to the courts in Austin, winning her two qualifying matches in straight sets.
Of course, this is a tougher assignment, but the fact that she's had two matches to warm up in Austin should not be overlooked. Volynets hasn't played in Austin yet. Moreover, we've seen Bartunkova beat better players than Volynets, who wasn't at her best when losing to Kimberly Birrell last time out.
