On Monday, for those not quite at the top of the rankings, it's all about qualifying for the prestigious WTA event in Indian Wells, known officially as the BNP Paribas Open. The in-form Katie Boulter will take to the Californian courts having recently won the WTA event in Ostrava, Czechia, while she certainly played well in Merida last week, eventually going out to Jasmine Paolini, and there's no shame in that. Can she continue to play her best tennis, though?
Hoping to upset the British player is Viktoriya Tomova, who is currently ranked at 151 in the world. The Bulgarian has had nearly two weeks to rest, recover and prepare following her exit in Portugal. If she's refreshed and ready to deliver something near her best, she could cause a few problems for Boulter, which is exactly what happened when the pair met a year ago.

Katie Boulter has been in decent form of late, there can be no denying that and if she can reproduce the level that she's recently displayed in both Ostrava and Merida, then she'll likely win this match. However, we're not talking about a top-20 player here. Boulter isn't the most consistent performer, and it's far from easy for players of her level to stay at their best for long periods, so we shouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be a little harder than the early odds suggest.
For my money, the early odds are something of an overreaction to Boulter's recent results. After all, it's not as if she hasn't dropped sets against lower-ranked players, doing so recently against Korpatsch and Havlickova. Moreover, Viktoriya Tomova came out on top when these two met on a hard court last season, while in four previous matches against Boulter, she's only lost once in straight sets, and that was on clay. In other words, the Bulgarian looks a little generously priced to, at the very least, avoid a straight-set defeat.
