Wednesday's WTA matches in Madrid include a showdown between Karolina Pliskova and Anastasia Potapova. This is an interesting match, not least of all because both players have been in resurgent form since the beginning of the European clay-court season. Both players delivered numerous promising moments at the WTA event in Linz, where Potapova reached the final, losing to Mirra Andreeva.

Since Linz, both Pliskova and Potapova have continued to play well, enjoying Madrid. The Czech player has won four matches, beating the likes of Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens, both of whom are ranked above Potapova. On that evidence, we shouldn't be surprised if Pliskova really pushes her opponent here. At the same time, the Austrian is unlikely to fold tamely having not lost in straight sets since returning to clay.
