One of Wednesday's WTA Charleston matches that presents us with a gilt-edged opportunity is the one involving the woman who won this event a year ago. 2025 champion Jessica Pegula will begin her attempt at securing the title in back-to-back seasons with a very winnable match against Yulia Putintseva. The world number five arrives in very decent form too, so it's not exactly difficult to envisage her having a strong week. She made the quarters in Miami last week and has lost only two of her last 13 matches. 

Putintseva, who is ranked as the world number 72 has been somewhat up and down in recent times, with the Kazakh player failing to win back-to-back matches since January. She did well to beat Lulu Sun during the first round of this tournament, but this is where the road likely ends for a player who typically struggled against the best. She's certainly struggled against Pegula in the past.
