Jessica Pegula will attempt to book her spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 US Open on Sunday as she goes up against fellow American Ann Li in the round of 16 in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Pegula, who finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the 2024 US Open, will walk into Sunday’s All-American clash with Li as a consensus favorite at -380.

Pegula moved one win away from reaching another Grand Slam quarterfinal after blasting two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka of Belgium 6-1 7-5 in the third round. Pegula had also ousted her first two opponents in the same fashion, beating Mayar Sherif of Egypt 6-0 6-4 and Anna Blinkova of Russia 6-1 6-3 in straight sets.
Li has emerged as a surprise entry in the round of 16 of this year’s US Open, having reached this stage of the tournament after pulling off gutsy wins over Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia 4-6 6-2 6-4, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-3 6-3, and Pricilla Hon of Australia 7-5, 6-3. Li, who finished runner-up in Cleveland a week ago, has won seven of her last eight matches.

Despite Jessica Pegula putting on a clinic through the first three rounds, Ann Li is poised to give her the first real test at this year’s US Open. Pegula defeated Li 6-3 7-6(3) in the second round of the 2025 French Open in July, but it’s also worth mentioning that Li outgunned the world’s No.4 in the only hard-court match in their head-to-head series, in the semifinal of the 2018 Lexington Open, 2-6 6-3 6-4. I must admit that Pegula looks like a real contender out there after destroying her first three opponents. On the other hand, Pegula has struggled to get past the fourth round of Grand Slam tournaments this year, even crashing out in the first round of the 2025 Wimbledon Open. Li went 0-for-4 in her first four attempts to beat a WTA top-5. The possibility is still high that Li will absorb her fifth loss against a top-5 caliber opponent at the end of Sunday’s match. However, this version of Li sure has a puncher’s chance of pulling off an upset against the second-best-ranked American in this tournament.
