Jelena Ostapenko fended off a spirited challenge from the world’s No.96 Ella Seidel to reach the second round of the 2026 French Open.
The former Roland Garros champion hiked up her clay-court record this year to 7-4, and more importantly, moved one win closer to setting up another mouthwatering showdown with Iga Swiatek, provided that both of them hurdled their respective matches on Wednesday.
Looking to foil Ostapenko’s plans is grizzled veteran Magda Linette, who outlasted Tereza Valentova 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the first round. The 34-year-old Pole raised her 2026 record to 2-2 following the hard-earned win.
Ostapenko and Linette played each other twice before, with the Latvian claiming the win in the first encounter at a Billie Jean King Cup tie in 2018 while Linette evened the tally at 1-1 with a straight-set win at the 2020 Italian Open.
