As Monte Carlo kicks off, Gaël Monfils takes on Australian Jordan Thompson in the first round. This will be the second time in 3 weeks that the two meet on the ATP circuit, following their match in Miami in the 2nd round. Monfils won that match in 3 sets, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. The Frenchman made up for the loss of the first set and slapped the Australian in the face in the last 2 sets. Gaël Monfils then logically lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the 3rd round (in 2 sets). The French player is currently on the rise and doing rather well in the tournaments he enters. In Doha, he reached the semi-finals, in Indian Wells, he finished on a high by reaching the 1/8 finals, then Miami where he made it through 2 rounds. Eliminated at the 2nd tournament in Estoril, he'll be determined to win in Monaco against an opponent within his reach. Jordan Thompson was eliminated from the Acapulco, Indian Wells, and Miami tournaments on his debut. It was only in Houston recently that he managed to reach the quarter-finals. The Los Cabos winner has a good level but will come up against a tough opponent in Monte-Carlo.
