When the pair last me, back in 2024, Lys came out on top, but plenty has changed since then, with the Czech player recently improving, arriving at Flushing Meadows in fine form. The same cannot be said for her opponent.
Eva Lys may be the higher-ranked player, but we shouldn't rush to assume that the German will make light work of this. She's up against a qualifier who is clearly enjoying the Flushing Meadows conditions, a qualifier who has already defeated two higher-ranked players in straight sets since arriving at the US Open. Right now, Knutson is thriving, while Lys is not, so don't be surprised if we see something of a minor upset unfold here.

The German hasn't played as much hard-court tennis as Knutson in recent weeks, while she's been struggling to deliver the goods, losing three out of four since leaving the grass-court game behind back in June.
