Feyenoord and Fenerbahçe meet on August 6 in a marquee Champions League qualifier that pits Dutch and Turkish heavyweights against each other. The first leg in Rotterdam brings together two clubs with rich history and passionate fanbases, both eager to return to Europe’s elite stage. Feyenoord come in having navigated a challenging period last season. They won the Dutch Eredivisie title in 2023 under manager Arne Slot, but failed to defend it in 2024; in fact, they finished third.
At home, Feyenoord are traditionally strong at De Kuip, and they’ll rely on that fortress atmosphere. On the opposite side, Fenerbahçe enter the tie under the bright spotlight of their superstar coach: José Mourinho, who was appointed last year.
Now, with a year of Mourinho’s influence, Fener look more formidable. They have started their new domestic season strongly – in recent friendlies and early league outings, they notched several wins and appear to be clicking, having won five of their last six competitive games dating back to the end of spring.
Player talent abounds on both teams. Feyenoord will be looking to their new attacking focal point, Japanese striker Ayase Ueda, to provide goals. Ueda joined last season and has shown flashes of clinical finishing. Supporting him is creative midfielder Calvin Stengs, a Dutch international whose playmaking skills and long-range shooting are vital to Feyenoord’s offense.
In defense, goalkeeper Justin Bijlow is a steady presence who will need to be at his best, especially facing Fener’s firepower. Speaking of that firepower, Fenerbahçe’s lineup is studded with star names. Up front, they’ve secured Youssef En-Nesyri, the Moroccan striker who was a standout at the World Cup and comes from a successful stint in Spain.

Our Feyenoord vs Fenerbahce Istanbul Prediction
En-Nesyri’s aerial ability and work rate will test Feyenoord’s center-backs constantly. Behind him, Fener’s midfield boasts Brazilian maestro Fred (formerly of Manchester United), who has revitalized the center of the park with his passing range and high work rate since joining.
Creativity for Fenerbahçe might come from the flanks: İrfan Can Kahveci, a Turkish international winger, can deliver dangerous crosses and set pieces, and new signing Sebastian Szymanski, a Polish attacking midfielder, adds scoring punch (he was one of their top scorers last season).
Notably, Fener’s goalkeeper is Dominik Livaković, the Croatian number one, whose penalty-saving heroics are well known – he could be crucial if this tie comes down to fine margins. Tactically, it’s also a fascinating battle: Van Persie’s youthful coaching career versus Mourinho’s legendary experience. Feyenoord typically play an attacking, high-tempo style at home, pressing aggressively.
Fenerbahçe under Mourinho can be more pragmatic – expect them to be organized, and perhaps content with a draw or low-scoring affair to bring back to Istanbul. Ultimately, Feyenoord’s home support and attacking intent will push them to take risks for a win. Fenerbahçe certainly have the talent to get an away goal and have been in better form of late, but traveling to the Netherlands is never easy.
If Feyenoord can rediscover the free-scoring form they had in early 2023 (they averaged over 2 goals per game then), they could grab a first-leg advantage. This one is tough to call, but Feyenoord might just edge it on the night with youthful energy and the desire to impress their new coach. Our prediction for Feyenoord vs. Fenerbahçe: Feyenoord Rotterdam to win.
