by Carlos Zabala in Women's Euro Picks

Ultimately, betting sites and most punters judged the Spanish and English women's national teams well, as both were the two top contenders for the 2025 Women's Euro Cup. Next Sunday in Basel, Switzerland, Spain will face the Lionesses in the highly anticipated final.

Despite England being the reigning European champions and Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman having led her teams to an impressive five consecutive international finals, Spain is heavily favored in the betting for the final.

According to betting sites, Spain will have an implied probability of over 55% of winning the final in regular time. This confidence in the Spanish national team is explained by several reasons; the main one is that Spain reaches the final in the midst of a 10-match unbeaten streak. Another important factor is that Spain is the current winner of the Women's World Cup, won the 2023/2024 Nations League, is in the semifinals of the new edition of that tournament, and beating England in Sunday's final would secure a historic treble of titles.

England W - Spain W: Form Analysis

Spain reaches the final of the Women's Euro Cup having broken several unfavorable historical trends, especially in this tournament. One of them is that Spain's victory against Switzerland was only the first in Spain's history in a direct elimination from a European Championship. Spain has never won this tournament.

In the semifinals, Spain had to break an unfavorable cycle in its head-to-head matches against Germany. There was no team more difficult for Spain than the Germans, so much so that they had never beaten them in seven previous matches. And yet, the Spanish, heavy favorites to win the semi-final, drew and had to resort to extra time, with Bonmatí scoring in the 113th minute to seal their place in the final by avoiding a penalty shootout.

However, there was even more drama in the quarterfinals and semifinals for the English, who started this European Championship by losing to France and then swept aside the Netherlands and Wales in the group stage. In the quarterfinals, with 10 minutes left, England were trailing the Swedes 0-2, and it was then that saving goals from Bronze and Agyemang came in to take the semi-final to extra time and later to penalties, which the Lionesses would win. Agyemang again scored a last-minute goal against Italy in the semifinal, and Kelly scored the goal in extra time that gave the Lionesses a place in the final, also at the last moment, as if in a movie.

England W & Spain W Squad Analysis

Without a doubt, many of the world's best players will be competing in Sunday's final in Basel, one of particular importance for Aitana Bonmatí. The Barcelona player has been instrumental in Spain's overwhelming run and ten-match unbeaten streak. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner was the one who scored the goal that put Spain in the final.

But to win, the Spanish team will have to breach the English goal, which is well defended by Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who was heavily challenged from the quarterfinals onwards and responded well, making 5 saves against the Swedes and 4 of 5 shots on target against the Italians.

But the top scorers in this European Championship are two Spaniards: Esther González, who plays for a club in the United States and scored 4 goals, and another Barcelona player, Alexia Putellas, who could very well be the best player in this tournament with her 3 goals and 4 assists.

In attack for the Lionesses, there are concerns about whether Lauren James will be healthy for the final following her ankle injury, but if that's not the case, they can rely on Arsenal's Chloe Kelly, who scored the goal that gave England a place in the final against Italy.

Our England W vs Spain W Prediction

The archive of England women's matches against Spain is abundant, as abundant as it is close, and it is England who, in 14 matches against each other since the first in 2007, holds the slimmest advantage in the series. In 2025 alone, they've played twice in the Nations League: England won 1-0 at Wembley in February, and Spain won 2-1 in the return leg at the RCDE Stadium. Another close game in Sunday's final in Basel therefore seems likely. Our prediction for Spain W vs England W is: England W to win or draw.
