Emma Raducanu of Great Britain faces her first real test on Friday when she goes up against former Wimbledon Open champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the third round of the 2025 US Open. Raducanu is a +140 underdog in this match.
Raducanu breezed through to the third round of the 2025 US Open after another dominant win over Indonesia’s Janice Tjen on Wednesday. Raducanu wasted no time stomping her class on Tjen, collecting 28 points behind the first serves and firing eight aces to win all her service games. The former US Open champion also won 21 return points, leading up to four breakpoint conversions. Raducanu, who also demolished Ena Shibahara 6-1 6-2 in the first round, has improved her 2025 hard-court record to 15-9.
Rybakina, on the other hand, captured her 12th win in 15 matches in the North American hard-court season following a straight-set win over Tereza Valentova of Czech Republic 6-3 7-6(7). In her upcoming match against her doubles partner at the Washington Open several weeks ago, Rybakina will be trying to earn her first fourth-round appearance at the US Open after coming up short to make intop the round of 16 of this Grand Slam event three times.

While she lost to Elena Rybakina 0-6, 1-6 in her first and only matchup with the top Kazakh in the first round of the 2022 Tennis Sydney Classic, Raducanu is playing with a much better form over the past four weeks of tennis on the North American hard-courts, which saw her reach the semifinal of the 2025 Mubadala Citi Washington Open and push world’s No.1 Aryna Sabalenka to the limit in their third-round tussle at the Cincinnati Open, 7-6(3) 4-6 7-6(5).
