For the first time in 2026, at the WTA event in Stuttgart, world number two Elena Rybakina will play a clay-court match. Taking on the Grand Slam winner will be Diana Shnaider, who at number 19 in the world, is no poor player. While Rybakina is playing on clay for the first time this season, the Russian is playing her fifth clay-court match, winning three of the other four.
We recently saw Shnaider come up short against world number five Jessica Pegula, but she put up a fight, so much so that she took the match to three sets, which suggests that she ought to be capable of challenging Rybakina, who probably won't immediately be on her best having not played competitively on clay since June of last year. After all, Shnaider has had a match in Stuttgart already, and she took to the conditions well. We can expect this experience to hold her in good stead here.
