Denis Shapovalov entered the tournament through qualifying, defeating Yu Hsiou Hsu (world No. 183) and Sho Shimabukuro (world No. 165) following his withdrawal. He then went on to win his first round tie against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(7-5), 7-6(10-8). This was a promising victory for the Canadian, who had been stopped in the first round both in Montreal and at the US Open. Additionally, the quarter-finalist in Washington at the beginning of August, the Canadian forfeited his match against a certain Ben Shelton, who went on to win 7-6(7-5), 6-6(6-3). 

Ben Shelton, seeded number 14, should still have their previous duel in mind and should be keen to win this time without benefiting from his opponent's withdrawal.
