by Bradley Gibbs in Concachampions Picks
On Sunday night, the Vancouver Whitecaps will attempt to join an elite club by winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup, a tournament that has been dominated by Mexican teams over the years. Playing away from home, against a Cruz Azul side that has the luxury of playing on home turf at Estadio Olimpico Universitario, a stadium situated in the capital of Mexico City.
The fact that this game is in Mexico City is obviously a big plus for the Cruz Azul boys, but if we scratch beneath the surface, does it give the Whitecaps a little bit of a free hit? All the pressure is surely on the Mexicans, who are big favorites to get the job done in their own stadium. In contrast, the Whitecaps are seen as outsiders. Sure, Jesper Sorensen's men want to get their hands on the trophy, but the fact that they're not really expected to given the circumstances could free them up to play pressure-free soccer. An truly intriguing contest awaits.

CF Cruz Azul - Vancouver Whitecaps: Form Analysis
It's hard to pick holes in the recent form of the hosts, who've been winning with serious regularity. Having said that, they did lose their latest match, coming up short away to Club America. They've since had a nice chunky bit of time to rest and prepare for this huge final. Moreover, the Mexicans show strong form at home, not losing at Estadio Olimpico Universitario since December 2024. They've won each of their last eight home games in all competitions.
For the vistiors, well, road games aren't often a problem. In fact, we're talking about a Vancouver Whitecaps team that knows how to tussle away from the comforts of BC Place. Sunday's visitors have lost none of their last 11 road games, picking positive results in Mexico on their way to this final. Such form bodes well for the MLS team.

CF Cruz Azul & Vancouver Whitecaps Squad Analysis
From a personnel point of view, the hosts are expected to be at pretty much full strength on Sunday. Vicente Sánchez's men have had nearly two weeks to rest and prepare for this fixture, so there should be absolutely no fitness concerns. Uruguayan defender Gabriel Fernandez has been out for a while with a knee injury and is expected to continue on the sidelines. Ignacio Rivero missed the last domestic match through suspension but should feature here.
For the Whitecaps, Ryan Gauld is out, which is of course a big blow. The Scotsman provides Sorensen's men with lots of creativity, though fortunately, he is the only key absentee.

Our CF Cruz Azul vs Vancouver Whitecaps Prediction
Listen, this is going to be tough for the Whitecaps, there can be no denying that. The Mexican hosts have the luxury of playing on home soil, in their home stadium, where they're very tricky to beat. However, it's not as if they always keep clean sheets, conceding in four of their last six at home in all competitions, while the both Club America and the Seattle Sounders scored in Mexico City during the last two rounds. Given how strong the visitors can be offensively, don't discount them in the final third. In fact, the scoring form of both makes a bet on at least one goal at either end look leniently priced.
