Coco Gauff of the United States seeks to exorcise her old demons as she prepares for a testy match with former world’s No.1 Maria Sakkari of Greece in the third round of the 2025 Indian Wells Open. Gauff snapped a three-match losing skid with a 6-4 3-6 7-6(4) squeaker over Moyuka Uchijima of Japan in the second round. It wasn’t the cleanest win but Gauff could not ask for a better result after going through horrendous period which saw her crash out in the second round in Qatar and Dubai. Sakkari, meanwhile, dominated Viktoriya Tomova 6-0 6-3 to reach the round of 32. The Greek raked in 22 points off her first serves and captured seven service breaks to bag her first victory in four games. Sakkari is 5-9 this season as she’s still working her way back to top form after suffering a shoulder injury late last year.

Gauff has been too unstable lately that I am having a hard time trusting her again. When she’s in form, Gauff is an unstoppable force of nature who can beat anybody on the tour. However, a series of early-round exits and a shaky second-round performance against Uchijima, a player she should demolish given the disparity in their rankings, put her on a vulnerable spot in her match against Sakkari, who defeated her 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2 in the semifinal of the very same tournament a year ago. Although the current Sakkari is far from the version she once was at the peak of her power, her losing streak-busting win against Tomova could reignite the competitive fire that is sleeping inside her. I am not sure if Sakkari can deliver a giant-slaying performance on Monday, but she can certainly give Gauff another nerve-wracking match.
