An Atlantic matchup on Monday has the 38-37-6 Buffalo Sabres visiting the 44-28-8 Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning have been safely in a wildcard spot for a while, helped by an excellent 24-10-5 record at home. They lost to the Ottawa Senators in their most recent game at Amalie Arena in a shootout, the first time that they have lost a shootout this season. They also lost their final road game of the season, 2-4 in Washington on Saturday against the Capitals. There has been no lack of effort from the Bolts, despite not having anything much to play for but the Caps were able to take advantage of the mistakes that Tampa made to see them off. Back at home for their last two this season could see them step up their game ahead of the playoffs.
The Sabres will not be making the playoffs this year as they close out their season in Florida. They have 82 points so far, a step backwards from the 91 that they picked up last season but still better than any other season since 2011/12. They fell in overtime to the Florida Panthers on Saturday, a game where four goals were scored in the first 10 minutes of the first period and then nothing until overtime. They ended their home games with a 4-2 win over the Washington Capitals, winning four of their last five at KeyBank Center. They have been happier there than on the road in recent weeks, their weekend defeat at the Panthers leaving them with 242 goals scored and 242 goals conceded this season.
