At the ATP event in Houston, on Wednesday, there's a former champion taking to the court, and that previous winner is Ben Shelton, who scooped the top prize at this clay-court event back in 2024, beating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in an exciting three-set finale. Having not quite been at this best on hard surfaces in recent weeks, the world number nine will be hoping that the return to Houston sparks a revival of his best tennis.
Up against Shelton is Zhizhen Zhang, who has dropped to a lowly 263 in the ATP Rankings. Clearly a capable player on his day, Zhang is a little frustrating. He recently won a Challenger event in good style, but he's failed to replicate that form in ATP events. However, he has a promising record against Shelton, winning when the pair last met on clay, while he may just be playing the American at the right time. He couldn't cause an upset, could he?

It would absolutely be a shock if Ben Shelton was to exit the tournament at the first time of asking, but given that this will be his first clay-court match since June of last year, it's not overly difficult to see the American having to work a little harder than the early odds suggest to get the job done here. In fact, if we look at how Shelton has not won any of his last seven matches in straight sets, a bet on Zhizhen Zhang to avoid a straight-set defeat starts to appeal.
Factor in that Zhang has already played on the clay in Houston, which could give him a preparation edge, and also consider that the Chinese player won when the pair last met on clay, and odds of -105 really do start to look quite generous.
