Ben Shelton of the United States will slug it out with the upset-minded Matteo Gigante in the third round of the 2025 French Open.
Shelton got a free pass to the third round after his second-round opponent Hugo Gaston retired due to injury. The walkover win was a welcome development for Shelton, who had to gut out a five-set victory over Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-3 in the first round. Shelton reached the semifinal of the year’s first Grand Slam at the Australian Open and hopes to follow that up with another prolific campaign at the French Open.
Gigante was relatively unknown before he stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the second round, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. It marked the fifth straight win for the 167th-ranked Gigante in this tournament, including the three wins in the qualifying phase.
