Alexandra Eala of the Philippines will take on Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia for the second time in over three months on Wednesday in the second round of the 2025 Eastbourne International.
Eala collected her seventh grass-court win on the year and first main tour win on the surface in the most emphatic way as the rising Asian star blasted Lucia Bronzetti of Italy 6-0 6-1 in the first round. Eala, who defeated Hailey Baptiste 6-7(1) 7-6(4) 6-1 in the final qualification match, landed 72 percent of her first serves, winning 22 points. She also broke Bronzetti 5 times on 25 return points.
Ostapenko also posted a straight-set win over Sonay Kartal of Great Britain 6-3 7-6(2) to arrange a second-round duel with Eala, the same player who eliminated her in the second round of the 2025 Miami Open. Ostapenko collected 29 points on her first serves and broke Kartal 5 times to open her 2025 grass-court season on a winning note.
