What will it take at Augusta?
At the majors in general, the top players thrive, and there’s nothing crazy about that notion. The Masters is arguably the major where this applies most in golf betting. At Augusta, the best of the best regularly come to the fore, so much so that, in recent times, there really hasn’t been a shock winner.
The last four winners of this fabulous competition have entered the tournament no lower than third in the world rankings. To push this further, you’d have to go back to 2011, to see the winner of this event who wasn’t ranked inside the top 25, and even then, it was world number 29 Charl Schwartzel who came out on top.
Angel Cabrera, who wore the green jacket in 2009, was the last player to win The Masters when ranked outside of the top 50.
In other words, you clearly need to be a top player to seriously fight for the green jacket, and the top players rate very highly according to the Official World Golf Rankings, it’s as simple as that.

In a hugely unsurprising turn of events, world number one and serial major winner Scottie Scheffler heads the betting ahead of the 2026 renewal of the Augusta bonanza.

Interesting trends ahead of The Masters
Here are some interesting (and hopefully useful) trends ahead of The Masters:
- Only one of the last ten winners were aged 26 or younger.
- Nine of the last ten winners had played in the tournament at least three times before winning.
- None of the last ten winners were ranked lower than 25th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
- Four of the last five winners were ranked in the top three of the Official World Golf Ranking.
- Eight of the last ten winners had previously finished in the top ten at Augusta.
- The Masters has been won by an American in five of the last eight years.
- Each of the last ten winners had previously won at least four events during their career.
Finally, it’s time to get stuck into my idea of some viable betting opportunities before the action begins. Here goes.
Collin Morikawa to Win/Top 10 Finish: +3500 & +220
A year ago, I outlined Collin Morikawa as a great bet ahead of this famous competition, and I feel very much the same this time around. Spoiler alert, Morikawa didn’t win this a year ago, but he played well, while he’s been in great form during the early part of the 2026 season, so do not be surprised if he features prominently at Augusta.
The two-time major winner has not finished worse than 14th at The Masters since 2021, and even then, he still made the top 20. Since 2022, he’s made the top ten on three occasions, finishing fifth and third. He has the tools to handle the Augusta test.
Another interesting trend that I didn’t mention above is the fact that only two of the last 13 winners of this event had gained less than 1.7 strokes (on average) tee-to-green in the three months preceding The Masters. In the three months leading up to the 2026 renewal, no player has gained more strokes tee-to-green than Collin Morikawa.
All in all, Morikawa is my idea of a fantastic betting proposition this week. In fact, I’d argue that he should be getting lots more respect. In other words, he’s generously priced.
The world number seven ticks nearly every trend box, he’s been in great form, plus he’s a proven major performer, who knows what it takes to win the biggest events. I’m betting him to both win the tournament and make the top ten.
