Young Boys Bern will play their first match of the Europa League group stage against Greek club Panathinaikos on Thursday, September 25, at 9:00 p.m. at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern. Qualified for this European campaign after a double victory in the play-off against Slovan Bratislava (0-1 and 3-2) at the end of August, the current fourth-placed team in the Super League, just four points behind leaders St. Gallen, suffered their second defeat of the season away to Aarau (1-0) in the round of 32 of the Swiss Cup this weekend. However, this elimination follows five consecutive victories, the last two of which were in the Swiss championship against Lugano (3-1) and Lucerne (1-2) on September 14.
Panathinaikos is 12th (out of 14) in the Greek championship and has yet to win after three games (two draws and one defeat). Since qualifying for the group stage of this season's Europa League after a victorious play-off against Turkish club Samsunspor (2-1 and 0-0), Pana has suffered one defeat at Kifisia (3-2) and two draws against Levadiakos (1-1) and Olympiakos (1-1) on Sunday. Their only victory in the last month of competition came against Athens Kallithea (1-0) on the first day of the Greek Cup, thanks to their Nigerian striker and new signing Cyriel Dessers
