The Washington Nationals (48-56 SU, 57-47 ATS) face the St. Louis Cardinals (53-50 SU, 52-51 ATS) in what has been a strange series. The Nationals won the first game at Busch Stadium, which made it four wins in five for the visiting team in this series this season. The home team has gone just 4-6 in the teams’ past 10 meetings, and the Nationals have won the series opener in both of their past two trips to Missouri.
However, St. Louis turned the tables in the rest of the series last year, and the Cardinals need to do the same thing here. The Redbirds started the second half in a promising fashion by beating Atlanta twice, but they followed by dropping two of three to Pittsburgh. With the National League turning into a logjam for the wild card, St. Louis can’t afford to drop any more of these kinds of games.

Based on his past two road starts, Jake Irvin appears to be the right guy for St. Louis to break out of its slump. The Cardinals usually hit the Nationals well, and Irvin got shelled by both the Mets and Brewers the last two times he took the mound away from the District. Irvin has been a solid road starter for most of the year, but he has a 7.41 ERA in his past three starts.
Kyle Gibson has actually been better away from St. Louis than at Busch Stadium. He just saw the Nationals three weeks ago and did a fine job missing bats, but he only made it through five innings because he was either missing bats entirely or seeing the ball land safely when the Nats put it in play. Gibson has always needed to miss contact to be an effective hurler, and if the Nationals are making contact, they’re going to put up runs. Given the teams’ recent histories, a high-scoring affair looks likely. Our prediction for Washington vs. St. Louis is Over 8.5.
