The Washington Nationals (42-50 SU, 52-40 ATS) come up against the New York Mets (45-45 SU, 44-46 ATS) in a matchup that represents a redemption opportunity for starting pitcher Patrick Corbin. Corbin, much maligned for his struggles ever since the Nationals’ World Series victory, has actually pitched somewhat well in his past five starts, even though his team has just one win in those games.
However, the last time that Corbin didn’t pitch well was against this same New York lineup. The Mets bombed the Nationals 9-1 that day, with Corbin allowing six earned runs and exiting in the sixth inning. The way Washington hit that day, nothing was going to save Corbin, but he cannot allow New York to bury his team early. The Mets have mostly controlled this matchup this year, and the Nats have to avoid the early hole.

Our New York Mets vs Washington Nationals Prediction
Things haven’t been much better when Luis Severino heads to the hill. In his past two starts, Severino has gotten bombed, allowing 11 runs in 13 innings. He has mostly pitched well in Flushing, but his most recent home start wasn’t a great outing. The bullpen had more to do with the loss, but Severino didn’t help matters by giving up the runs he did.
That said, Severino was on the other end of that 9-1 blowout of Washington last month, and that seven-hitter might have been his best performance of the season. If he pitches anything close to how he did last time he faced the Nationals, the Mets will have a big edge. Given how New York has dominated Washington in 2024, that seems the most likely outcome.
