The rubber match between the Atlanta Braves (36-17) and the Washington Nationals (26-27) will take place this afternoon, after the Nationals shut out the Braves yesterday.
Jake Irvin went 5 innings of not only scoreless, but hitless work for the Nationals. He was lifted heading into the 6th, and Brad Lord gave up just 1 hit in his innings of work. That proved to be the only hit allowed between the pitchers as Richard Lovelady came in and picked up the save in the 9th. Jorbit Vivas was the only National with more than one hit in the game and added an RBI and a run scored in the 2-0 win.
In game one, both teams scored numerous runs. Albeit most of them came in extra innings. In fact, 5 of the 9 were in extra frames. It was Chadwick Tromp of the Braves who walked it off with an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th for the Braves.
While divisional matchups are always tough, the Braves seem due to put up an easy victory on this Washington team that, statistically, does not belong in the same conversation as the Braves. Martin Perez will get the start for the Braves and is carrying a solid 2.85 ERA on the season. He will be opposed by Foster Griffin, who has given up his fair share of runs recently.

Perez has looked great in over half of his starts this season. He is coming off a rocky one in Miami. There, he allowed 4 runs in 5 innings. However, he did the same thing back in early April and bounced back with a 1-run start the following outing. He should be set for a bounce-back start again here. Foster Griffin, on the other hand, has given up 14 runs over his last 2 starts. We expect this strong Atlanta lineup to get to him early and give Perez good run support.
