The Toronto Tempo host the Washington Mystics in a WNBA 2026 season opener on Friday, May 8, at Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto.
This marks the inaugural regular-season game for Toronto as the WNBA's first franchise based outside the United States. The Tempo did have two preseason games under their belt, but they lost both matches.
They lost an 83-78 decision to the Connecticut Sun and fell to the Minnesota Lynx, 73-66. It was a cause for optimism that the newly built Tempo lost both games in single digits.
Toronto will be led by Brittney Sykes and Marina Mabrey, two veterans they acquired through the expansion draft. The Tempo also selected Kiki Rice from UCLA as their top pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
Meanwhile, the Mystics will also rely on a young core led by Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen, and Shakira Austin. Citron averaged 14.9 points and 4.0 rebounds last season, while Iriafen produced 13.3 points and 8.5 boards. Both players are coming off their rookie campaigns.
