The Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers are set to renew their rivalry on Tuesday at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Two Metropolitan Division rivals clash for the first time this season. The Capitals swept the regular-season series 4-0 last term, outscoring Philadelphia 17 to nine. This time around, the matchup should be much more competitive, as the Flyers have taken a significant leap as a team.
Philadelphia got off to a great start to the season and remains in playoff contention, though the team’s recent form must be worrying for head coach Rick Tocchet. The Flyers won only four games in January, allowing fewer than three goals in just four of 15 games.
Washington has also been slumping lately, but picked up a pair of morale-boosting victories last week. Saturday’s 4-3 overtime triumph against Metropolitan Division leaders, the Carolina Hurricanes, was particularly impressive, as Washington had to use its third-string goaltender due to injuries.
The Capitals begin this week with a back-to-back and will remain without Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren. The team must go without inexperienced Clay Stevenson and Garin Bjorklund between the sticks. With Stevenson starting on Monday versus the New York Islanders, Bjorklund could make his NHL debut against Philadelphia.

Our Philadelphia Flyers vs Washington Capitals Prediction
The Flyers have been sliding down the standings lately, but they have a very good opportunity to get back to winning ways on Tuesday night. Washington will be forced to go with an untested goalie, and it could leave the team very vulnerable.
Despite losing 11 of the last 13 games, Philadelphia has done quite well offensively. Tocchet’s side has scored at least three goals six times in the past nine games. The Flyers' skaters will likely be encouraged to shoot often against a rookie netminder on Tuesday, and they will be spurred on by the home crowd.
Our prediction for Philadelphia Flyers vs. Washington Capitals: Flyers to win race to 3 goals.
