The Washington Capitals visit the Columbus Blue Jackets, and it’s hard to say what the most impressive part of Washington’s start to the season is on defense. The Capitals have gotten excellent goaltending from both Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren, and the defense simply isn’t allowing pucks to get to the net anyway.
Only two of five opponents — Tampa Bay and Vancouver — have managed to light the lamp multiple times against the Capitals in 2025, and they’re coming off another one-goal night in hosting the Kraken last time out. In case you’re wondering if it’s just their work at home that’s been stellar, it’s not: Washington shut out the Rangers in New York, and its worst showing actually came on home ice in a 4-3 loss to Vancouver.

Both teams should come in fairly fresh, so this matchup is mostly going to be decided by who can take control of the game early. The biggest thing for Columbus is going to be to cut down on scoring chances. If the Capitals generate a shot total in the 20s, Columbus has a chance to win. If the Jackets allow 52 shots like they did to Minnesota, it’s not going to go well for them.
Although Columbus won the final two meetings between the teams last year, mitigating factors existed. First, the Jackets were a desperate team, while the Capitals had little to gain from those games. As a result, Washington lacked motivation and got routed. That shouldn’t be an issue here. Our prediction for Washington vs. Columbus is for the Capitals to win.
