NHL Metropolitan Division leaders, the Carolina Hurricanes, will try to extend their four-game winning streak on Tuesday night at the Lenovo Center against the slumping Washington Capitals.
The Capitals face their divisional rivals after going 1-1-5 across their last seven outings. With Alex Ovechkin struggling, the Washington offense has had a really tough time, letting down the team's outstanding defense.
Despite their recent poor spell, the Capitals maintain the best defensive record in the NHL, with 2.47 goals allowed per game. Logan Thompson leads all goalies in the league with a 1.61 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage.
On Tuesday, the Capitals defense faces one of the toughest tests in the NHL. The Hurricanes are scoring 3.87 goals per game, ranking third in the league. Strangely, they have scored only six power-play goals, but their overall depth in offensive talent has compensated for their lack of success with the man advantage.
Carolina's defense also deserves credit, as the team's backline has remained strong despite losing several players to injury. The latest blue-liner to go down is Charles-Alexis Legault, who suffered a skate cut on his hand during Sunday’s victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
