The Utah Mammoth return to their original home city to take on the Winnipeg Jets, and they’re hoping a new name can lead to a new result in a location that has been brutal on them. The franchise has not won in its past seven tries in Manitoba, dating back to when it was still the Arizona Coyotes.
Moving to Utah and getting an ownership group that actually cared has made a difference for the Mammoth in some ways, but last year, the difference in this series only showed up at home. Utah won both meetings in Salt Lake City with the Jets, but took another two defeats in Winnipeg. However, Utah is currently leading the Central in this young season, and a result here could put the Jets on notice.

The Jets did something new for them this season last time out: win a game while allowing three goals in the net. Winnipeg has won six of seven, and in all but their win over the Flames, the Jets have held the opposition to two goals or less.
A large part of the Jets’ success has been their penalty kill. Winnipeg has allowed just three power play goals on the season, and that ranks first in the NHL. Utah has cashed in on the power play in five straight games, and while that represents improvement rather than sustained success, it does suggest the Mammoth are living a bit too heavily on 5-on-4 than needed to handle the Jets. Utah has made some big strides, but the run has to end sometime, and recent history suggests that it’s going to come against the Peggers.
