The first quarterfinal of the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championships features a rematch of the last Olympic final between Canada and the United States, in a very different setting than in Milan.
With a perfect record in the first round, Canada has impressed, as expected. Team Canada won all seven of its games, defeating Sweden (5-3), Italy (6-0), Denmark (5-1), Norway (6-5 OT), Slovenia (3-1), Slovakia (5-1), and the Czech Republic (3-2). Misha Donskov’s squad showcased its offensive firepower (32 goals scored, the second-highest scoring line in the entire tournament) to overwhelm every opponent they faced. Having come to Switzerland to win the gold medal, Macklin Celebrini’s teammates know that a new competition begins this Thursday with the quarterfinals—and against their archrival, no less.
Winners of the Olympic tournament three months ago, the United States knew these World Championships would be different with a revamped roster and players still competing in the NHL playoffs. But the Stars and Stripes perhaps didn’t expect to struggle quite so much.
