Tottenham and Atletico Madrid will clash for the second time in just over a week on Wednesday evening. Given the poor season that they’re experiencing, the hosts could probably do without their current UEFA Champions League commitments, which is just as well, as they’re highly likely to be exiting the competition at this juncture.
As you would expect from a team struggling to stay above the EPL relegation zone, Spurs found visiting Metropolitano Stadium all too much last week. They were three goals behind inside 20 minutes, eventually losing by five goals to two. As a result of that rather displeasing first-leg display, the team from North London now has a mountain to climb. Will they climb that mountain? Or will their Spanish opponents make light work of getting the job done? The latter seems the most likely outcome.

The Atleti boys went into the first leg off the back of shifting through the gears to beat Real Sociedad in LaLiga, scoring three goals in the process, so it wasn’t surprising to see Diego Simeone’s men playing confident soccer of a front-footed nature. At the weekend, they delivered a more low-key display against city rivals Getafe, winning by a goal to zero. Something similar will surely suffice here.
