The Toronto Maple Leafs hope to spoil Peter DeBoer’s debut as the New York Islanders head coach on Thursday at UBS Arena.
The Islanders have enjoyed a decent campaign, going 42-31-5, but a late-season four-game skid prompted a sudden coaching change last week. General manager Mathieu Darche hopes to strike gold with this decision, just as the Vegas Golden Knights appear to have done. The Golden Knights are 4-0-0 since replacing Bruce Cassidy with John Tortorella.
Beating the Maple Leafs hasn’t been a hard task for much of the season. The team has taken a huge step back compared to previous years and won’t play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 10 years. However, Craig Berube’s men have raised their performance levels recently, posting a 3-2-1 record over the last six games.
The players appear to be thriving while playing without the pressure to make the postseason. Even with three-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews out of the lineup, Toronto has averaged 3.5 goals per game over the last two weeks.
DeBoer has been a hugely successful coach in the league, and the Islanders are massive favorites to win their first game under his leadership. However, the Maple Leafs could make it difficult for the hosts with their improved offense.
