Toronto FC meets DC United in the proverbial matchup between the stoppable force and the highly movable object. Only winless Montreal has scored fewer goals in the Eastern Conference than Toronto, which has just eight goals to its name. It’s been a long wait for fans of the Reds to see a goal hit the net: Toronto hasn’t scored at BMO Field since March 15 against Chicago.
That wait now stretches back 439 minutes, which has covered four full matches. The Reds’ defense has done well enough to keep Toronto from getting embarrassed, as Toronto has conceded just three times in its past four home matches. If the Reds are going to get anything going, they have to take advantage of a defense that’s failing to stop a nosebleed.

It’s hard to trust Toronto’s offense right now, but there’s even less reason to trust the DC United defense. Six straight D.C. matches have seen at least three goals cross the line, and that’s not because of United’s defense. Only New York Red Bulls failed to score at least twice against the weak United defense. With 23 goals conceded, no defense has been worse in the East.
That said, the United attack hasn’t been terrible. Toronto has real questions at the back four with Nickosen Gomis missing, and DC has at least shown a willingness to push forward.
