The Toronto Blue Jays (32-33 SU, 30-35 ATS) look to bounce back and get back to .500 in their second game against the Milwaukee Brewers (38-27 SU, 37-28 ATS). The Blue Jays haven’t much liked the opening game of a series in June, as they dropped series openers to both Baltimore and Oakland before winning the final two games of the series.
The Jays would be thrilled to do the same to Milwaukee, as it would mark their fifth consecutive series victory if they did. But to accomplish that, Toronto will have to get more out of Yusei Kikuchi than it has lately. Kikuchi has mostly pitched well in 2024, boasting a 3.48 ERA for the year. But in his past three starts, he’s given up five runs twice and sports a poor 6.91 ERA. He did give the Jays a strong start last time out against Baltimore, but before that, Toronto had lost seven straight Kikuchi starts.

Milwaukee has been dynamite in Wisconsin as of late, but the Brewers are also starting a rookie in Carlos Rodriguez. Rodriguez will make his MLB debut in this game, as he comes in with a 2.83 ERA in his time at Triple-A Nashville. Scouting reports say Rodriguez doesn’t really have a specific out pitch, but he does have a six-pitch arsenal that could help keep teams off balance.
But against Toronto, that might not be enough. The Jays are patient and know how to use a park to help their cause. Toronto is one of the better teams in the majors at hitting doubles, and extra-base hits could make life tough for Rodriguez as the tries to build his confidence for later in the game. The Blue Jays have veteran experience and will likely wait Rodriguez out to see what he has. That should make life easier for Kikuchi if they’re successful. Because of that, our prediction for Toronto vs. Milwaukee is for the Blue Jays to win.
