The Toronto Blue Jays (55-64 SU, 57-62 ATS) stayed true to form in their series opener against the Los Angeles Angels (52-67 SU, 65-54 ATS), winning the series opener for the fourth time in their past six tries. However, Toronto only managed to win two of those series, which is why the Jays find themselves looking up at the entirety of the AL East.
The Jays have nothing to play for, but for whatever reason, their bats have come to life whenever they’ve had Kevin Gausman on the mound. Gausman’s ERA is over a run worse than it was a season ago, but he’s just two wins shy of matching last year’s total. More importantly to Toronto, the Jays have won five straight with him on the mound and he’s been the winning pitcher four times.

Carson Fulmer has been much more consistent than Gausman. The Angels’ efforts to bring him into the rotation seem to be working, as Los Angeles has gotten at least four innings out of him in all five of his starts. Fulmer doesn’t yet have the endurance to be an innings-eater, but he can hold teams in check for about 75 pitches.
The total’s high for a reason: so much depends on Gausman. If he goes through seven or eight innings, Toronto might keep this thing reasonably low scoring. If Gausman gives way to the Blue Jays’ bullpen early, the over’s going to cash. Toronto’s bullpen is one of the biggest train wrecks in MLB in 2024, and the Angels would love to get into that group of pitchers. With Fulmer likely to allow two or three runs and the bullpen to follow, runs shouldn’t be at a premium. Our prediction for Toronto vs. Los Angeles is Over 9.5 Runs.
