The Toronto Blue Jays will try to keep the pressure on the Cleveland Guardians for the final AL wild card slot today when they face off against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO. Fans can follow the action on MLB.TV once the game gets underway at 7:10 p.m. EST.
With wins in six of their last seven games, including two over the Guardians, the Blue Jays have improved to 71-71 and sit a game back of Cleveland. The season series between the Blue Jays and Royals is currently tied at 2-2.
The pitching matchup is one neither fan base can feel particularly good about. Max Scherzer has won just two of 13 starts this season and has a 6.16 ERA this season. Yes, his last start was solid: he went seven innings, allowed a single, and struck out 10.
As for the Royals, Seth Lugo has better overall stats, but his numbers are still unimpressive. He has won six of his 28 starts this season while posting a 1.42 WHIP. He and Scherzer faced off in the August 25 game in Toronto. Lugo came away with the win after giving up six hits and one earned run over five innings.

I’m not crazy about either pitcher in this game; both have shown flashes throughout the season, but neither can be relied on. With two lineups doing a decent job at the plate over the last week (Kansas City: .249 BA; Toronto: .267 BA), I've got more faith in both lineups having solid days at the plate than in either pitcher having a good day. Because of that, I’m more inclined to take the over in what could be a relatively high-scoring game rather than try to pick a winner.
